MY BACKGROUND

I’m from Dutch and Irish roots and live in Granada, Spain. I teach Dutch as a foreign language and have a background as a university lecturer, with a focus on intercultural communication.

Living abroad with my daughter has taught me how challenging it can be to find your way in a new culture and how important language is in that process. That’s why I developed the Mama in Nederland programme; my lessons are all about speaking, using practical Dutch, and understanding the culture that comes with it.

MY TIME AS A LECTURER OF

International communication

As a lecturer of Intercultural Communication at Hanze University in Groningen, I developed course materials and taught students from around the world. I love creating a space where theory meets real-life experience through multicultural group projects, case studies, and cultural debates.

I have facilitated conflict management and mediation workshops, to help students navigate cultural misunderstandings. I have supported students during internships abroad, and guided them through the process of reverse culture shock when returning home.

As a language teacher and intercultural consultant, I find it a joy to be part of a process where people from different backgrounds learn to understand each other better, question their own norms, and stay open and curious about other perspectives and values.

“I'm absolutely satisfied with the intensive Dutch course I took! The 10-class program was perfectly structured, and the small group setting made it feel incredibly personalized. Emma used real-life scenarios from motherhood to teach us relevant vocabulary and phrases, which made the learning process so much more engaging and effective.
