DUTCH FOR MOTHERS - 2 WEEKS SUMMER COURSE

Mama in Nederland

Mama in Nederland is a 2-week Dutch language journey for international mothers living in the Netherlands. We will focus on three essential parts of daily life as a mother: supporting your child as they play and interact with Dutch-speaking children, communicating with schools and after-school activities, and finding the right words during visits to the doctor or when your child isn’t feeling well.

WELCOME TO MAMA IN NEDERLAND

Your child will grow up playing and speaking Dutch with their friends. In those moments, they’ll be learning about conflict, cooperation, and belonging — both at school and on the playground. And when you want to help your child navigate these moments with their Dutch-speaking friends, or speak to their teacher about how things are going, you might wish you had the right Dutch to express yourself.

THE ONLY DUTCH LANGUAGE PROGRAMME SPECIFALLY DESIGNED FOR MOTHERS

WHO IS THIS FOR?

This course is perfect for mums who already know a little Dutch (A2 level) and want to grow their speaking confidence together with other mums.

3 main TOPICS will be covered during the 2 week course. You are welcome to suggest additional subjects.

Play & social talk

Learn the Dutch you need to support your child during playtime with other children. You will practise simple and useful phrases that help you support your child calmly and clearly. This course gives you confidence to use Dutch in moments where emotions may be high, but kindness and clear words are needed.

Talk to the school

Get confident with the words you need when speaking to teachers, school staff, or coaches. Learn how to understand and respond to messages from school or clubs, talk about your child’s progress, or explain practical things.

Health

Learn how to make a doctor’s appointment, describe symptoms, and understand basic health-related Dutch. We’ll also practise simple language for pharmacies and dentists. We’ll practise short conversations you might have with a doctor, assistant, or receptionist.

IK BEN EMMA

With a background in intercultural communication, I spent over two decades working as an editor and translator before moving into language teaching in 2021. Originally from the Netherlands with Irish roots, I moved to Spain nine years ago without speaking a word of Spanish. Since then, I’ve become a mother and found myself raising a multilingual daughter while learning to navigate daily life in a country that isn´t my own.

I studied Spanish seriously, but it didn’t always mean I could keep up—parent-teacher meetings often left me guessing, and I struggled to step in when my daughter had problems with friends.

My experience of living abroad and raising a child across languages and cultures has taught me a lot about communication, patience, and how important it is to feel understood. That’s what led me to develop this course—for mums who are trying to build a life in the Netherlands, in a new language.

¨ I was looking for more than just grammar: a native speaker who could correct my pronunciation, and Dutch content that I could use every day. Something useful to start feeling integrated in Nederland! Emma is perfect!! I love her dynamic classes, and she always teaches us a new phrase to use.¨
